Downtown’s distinguished grande dame This palatial hotel sits in the center of downtown, facing the Horton Plaza retail and entertainment complex, two blocks from the Gaslamp quarter, and eight from the convention center. This renovated Italian-Renaissance hotel offers an elegant, turn-of-the-century lobby with 18th-century reproductions and hand-carved ceilings; high tea is served Thursday through Saturday. What to expect: This gracious hotel is full of grandeur, with a lobby decked out in 18th-century reproduction furnishings, marble floors, hand-carved ceilings, beveled mirrors, gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, Chinese porcelains, and Dutch and Venetian oil paintings. Insider tip: The hotel is a tribute to former president Ulysses S. Grant by his son, Ulysses S. Grant, Jr. When it opened in 1910, this was the place to be seen. Grant Grill Lounge - Adjacent to the restaurant, this cocktail lounge with pillars and wood paneling features intimate seating, a mirrored bar, a fireplace, and a giant-screen TV.

Bruegger’s Bagels - Bagels, sandwiches, soups, and other light fare are available daily at this independently owned shop that opens into the hotel lobby.
